Background and Purpose of Establishment
Recently, the shipbuilding industry is being re-evaluated as a strategic industry that goes beyond a simple manufacturing sector and is directly linked to national security, supply chain stability, maritime power, eco-friendly transition, and digital innovation.
The competitiveness of the United States' shipbuilding industry has weakened due to a decline in shipyards, a shortage of production personnel, and a weakening supply chain. Consequently, the country is pursuing the reconstruction of the shipbuilding industry as a national priority to maintain naval power and secure competitiveness in the shipping industry. Accordingly, the U.S. government is actively seeking to expand industrial and technological cooperation with allies and recognizes cooperation with South Korea, which possesses world-class shipbuilding competitiveness, as a core strategy.
Meanwhile, Korea has secured world-class competitiveness in future shipbuilding technologies, including merchant vessel construction, eco-friendly ships, autonomous ships, and digital shipyards, and there is a need to establish a new cooperation framework to respond to the expansion of the U.S. market and the restructuring of global supply chains.
However, current Korea-U.S. shipbuilding and marine cooperation is often pursued at the level of individual companies or institutions, resulting in a lack of systematic information sharing, identification of cooperation needs, and policy coordination. Furthermore, there has been a continuous need for a permanent cooperation platform capable of rapidly identifying and responding to policy changes, industry trends, and technological demands in the United States.
The Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding and Marine Industry & Technology Cooperation Center has been established to respond to these environmental changes, build a sustainable cooperation ecosystem in the shipbuilding and marine sectors of both countries, and jointly create future growth engines. By establishing a permanent cooperation base in the United States, it systematically supports industrial, technological, and policy cooperation, and plays a role in identifying cooperation needs between the two nations and linking them to practical joint projects.
